Many students dream of staying back in Australia and advancing their careers in that country. There are several visa sub-classes that allow you to do so. Once you have gained your post study work visa, it is important to understand the Skilled Occupation List completely. Understanding the ANZSCO code connected to each occupation and the occupation classification as MLTSSL, STSOL, and ROL is also imperative.
The ANZSCO Code
ANZSCO provides information on skill levels needed for each occupation and the experience required. Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) is a skill-based classification used to categorise all professional occupations and jobs in the Australian and New Zealand labour markets. The ANZSCO provides each occupation with a skill level. There are 5 skill levels in all.Skill Level 1: Occupations that require a Bachelor’s or higher degreeSkill Level 2: Occupations that require an Associate Degree, Higher Diploma or DiplomaSkill Level 3: Occupations that require a Certificate IV or IIISkill Level 4: Occupations that require a Certificate II or IIISkill Level 5: Occupations that require a Certificate I
The Break-up of ANZSCO by Occupational Group
ANZSCO also categorizes all occupations into 8 major groups (Managers, Professionals, Technicians and Trade Workers, Community and Personal Service Workers, Clerical and Administrative Workers, Sales Workers, Machinery Operators and Drivers, Labourers) and also into 5 sub-categories (major groups, sub-major groups, minor groups, unit groups and occupations).
Understanding the Skills Lists
Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), the Regional Occupation List (ROL) are the various listings under which each occupation falls.
The MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List) is a list of skilled occupations that can be sponsored through the Medium-Term Stream for a TSS visa. Your visa will be granted for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years depending on your employer. You can reapply for a visa an unlimited number of times but you will need an employer to nominate you each time. PR is easier with MLTSSL because you will not be required to work for a regional employer and you can work in metropolitan areas like Sydney and Melbourne.
The STSOL (Short-term Skilled Occupation List) is a list of skilled occupations that can be sponsored through the Short-Term Stream for a TSS visa. The visa is granted for 1 or 2 years as decided by your employer. You can reapply for the visa only once while you are in Australia and also, only once when you are outside Australia. You must work for an employer who is based in Regional Australia. Working in major cities in this category means that you will not be eligible for PR.
The ROL (Regional Occupation List) is a list of skilled occupations that can be sponsored through the Medium-Term Stream for a TSS visa. However, one important requirement for any ROL occupation is that the position must be in regional Australia.
This visa is for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years and you can reapply as many times as you like providing that you are nominated by your employer each time.
